9:00am-12:00pm: Catechesis Sessions - Called to live in the Holy Spirit
"If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit" (Gal 5:25)
This first catechesis attempts to respond to the question: who is the Holy Spirit? The intention is to help the young people to discover the beauty of the calling they received through Baptism and the beauty of their calling to the Christian life, and this mean
welcoming the Holy Spirit and allowing ourselves to be guided by Him. As young people follow Jesus Christ only after they have established a personal encounter with Him, it is important to dwell on the relationship between Christ and the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is the person of the Holy Trinity who permits us to meet and get to know Christ. Jesus Christ is present in our lives through the Holy Spirit.
2:00-10:00pm: Youth Festival
NOTE: Pilgrims will only be able to pick up lunch from their allocated catechesis location. No exemptions.
9:00am-12:00pm: Catechesis Sessions - The Holy Spirit, soul of the Church
"For in on Spirit we were all baptised into one body; and we were all given to drink of one Spirit" (1 Cor 12:13)
The intention of the second catechesis is to help the young people to discover the Church, Body of Christ, living organism, vitalised and enriched by the multiple gifts and charisms of the Holy Spirit.
Many young people today are attracted by Jesus Christ and the Gospel message, but they have difficulty in recognising Jesus is present in and active through the Church.
For this reason it is important to dwell on their relationship with the Church, Body of Christ and mystery of communion. It would be particularly opportune to explain to them the importance of receiving the sacraments of Christian initiation and to encourage the youth to live these sacraments to the full.
Emphasis should be placed on Confirmation as the sacrament conferred to empower us to be witnesses.
2:45pm: Arrival and welcome of Pope Benedict XVI. The Holy Father will arrive on a boatacade along Sydney Harbour, and greet pilgrims at Barangaroo.
WYD Insider's Tip: Stay on the south side of Darling Harbour, i.e. the side of the Opera House, to catch a closer glimpse of Pope Benedict XVI.
9:00am-12:00pm: Catechesis Sessions - Sent out into the world: the Holy Spirit, the principal agent of mission
"You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses" (Acts 1:8)
The intention of the third catechesis is to help the young people to become aware that, in our Christian calling, the call to holiness cannot be separated from the call to mission, and that the Holy Spirit gives us the strength and courage to be Christ's witnesses in the world.
It would be good to explain why mission is a duty of every Christian, emphasising that it is neither a voluntaristic action nor a command.
It is important to demonstrate that evangelisation is an outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and it comes from the heart; that the fruitfulness of every missionary action in the Church is above all the fruit of the Holy Spirit, the principal agent of mission.
3:00-6:00pm: Stations of the Cross - a re-enactment of Our Lord's Passion and Death through the city streets of Sydney. Station locations include St Mary's Cathedral, Barangaroo, Darling Harbour, Sydney Opera House Forecourt, and Domain. Each pilgrim group is assigned a station and will be able to watch that station "live". All other stations will be viewed via television linkup.
5:30am onwards: Pilgrimage walk to Randwick Racecourse - starts at Sydney Harbour Bridge, through city to Southern Cross Precinct. Roads reopen at 2pm so pilgrims are advised to complete their walks before then.
7:00pm-9:00pm: Evening Vigil with Pope
9:00am: Papal Motorcade commences from Centennial Park
10:00am: WYD Closing Mass celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI
12:15pm: Announcement of next WYD host city
