Each Sunday a reflection on life in the light of the Gospels will be offered on this page.
It is open to the contributions of any member of the parish community, subject to approval by the editorial staff.
Today, the Birth of John the Baptist is a nativity festival, a day of rejoicing. Only three births are celebrated in the Roman Calendar: the bird of Jesus (Dec 25th), the birth of Mary (Sept 8th), and John’s birth.
Celebrating John’s birth points to his importance in salvation history and to the intimate connection between John, Mary and Jesus.
John is the Lampstand of the Light, the best Man of the Bridegroom, the Voice of the Word (Jn 5:35;3:29;1:23).
Today, John is born in time and his birth is heralded by the signs of the coming of God’s reign. The barren are made fruitful, the tongue of the dumb shouts for joy.
John’s vocation was to prepare the way for Christ and then to decrease so that Christ may increase. Like a stake driven into the ground, John put his whole life on the line for the coming Kingdom.
With fearless witness, he stood for holiness and justice and suffered a martyr’s death.
